Liverpool's most stylish hotels – 2 Blackburne Terrace

We recently spent five nights in Liverpool, making a little film that I’ll share soon. It was my first time in the city and despite having heard great things about it, Liverpool exceeded my expectations. From fabulous architecture to wonderfully friendly people and exciting nightlife, the city has a lot to offer and we were spoilt for choice when choosing places to film.

However, one of the things that pleased me the most was the amount of stylish hotels on offer in Liverpool. When researching where to stay, we were so taken by some of the places that we decided to try a few different hotels while there. I wanted to find the most stylish and best hotel in Liverpool, and my research narrowed it down to four. And after trying them all, I decided all four deserved that title for slightly different reasons. So here’s a round-up of Liverpool’s most stylish hotels.

2 Blackburne Terrace

If I was pressed to choose just one hotel to take the crown, I think it would have to be 2 Blackburne Terrace. It’s a luxury guesthouse in the Georgian Quarter, impeccably styled in a way that honours the original architecture while adding lots of original and idiosyncratic touches, like brightly coloured upholstery, a purple-laquered dining table, and an impressive array of art. The downstairs library/reception is a sumptuous room, perfect for whiling away an afternoon with one of the many books and magazines on offer. We stayed in room one, an elegant space with generous proportions, including space for a beautiful freestanding bathtub. Every detail is cared for. A refreshing tea was ready for us on arrival, accompanied by handmade macaroons, all served with beautiful crockery. And breakfast was an elaborate affair, fit for royalty. Served in the art-filled dining room, our table was filled with a mouth-watering display of dishes, including fruits, cheeses and yoghurt – and that was before the hot course arrived! Our whole experience at 2 Blackburne Terrace was one of thoughtful luxury, all made possible by the wonderful owners Sarah and Glenn who have created an incredible haven within the city where their own hospitality serves as the perfect cherry on the cake.

Hope Street Hotel

Liverpool’s first boutique hotel – the Hope Street Hotel – is a favourite when celebrities come to town, and its pared down style, with lots of wood, white, exposed brickwork and luxurious touches, was a hit with us too. We stayed in a spacious studio, and stepping back into the room after a busy day in the city, offered a calming and comfortable retreat. We especially appreciated the large bathroom and bathtub, perfect for soaking in with the provided REN products, before wrapping up in a bathrobe and relaxing for the night. Breakfast is served in the attached restaurant, Carriageworks, and includes both a buffet and a la carte menu, with choices such as a full veggie breakfast (delicious!) and plenty of meaty options too. The hotel is on Hope Street, one of the areas we loved most in Liverpool, and is perfectly situated for exploring the city.

Titanic Hotel

The Titanic Hotel is an impressive place, partly down to the sheer scale of everything. Housed in a 19th Century Warehouse, part of a UNESCO world heritage site, the expansive hotel has supersize dimensions. The ceilings are high, the corridors wide, and our room was the biggest hotel room we’ve ever stayed in, with all rooms in the hotel at least double the size of a standard four star bedroom. But size isn’t the only thing that defines the Titanic; it’s also stylishly designed in a way that would sit well with hipsters, and our stay felt comfortable and luxurious. The downstairs lobby is a huge open-planned space, including plenty of places to lounge and a rum bar, featuring 60 world renowned rums. And beside that is Stanley’s Bar and Grill, the hotel’s own all-day restaurant where breakfast is also served in the morning. A colonnade terrace, overlooking the dock, runs the length of the building, perfect for sunny days. Another highlight is the hotel’s basement spa, which includes a Roman Bath style pool, steam room and sauna, relaxation area, gym and treatment rooms. It’s a perfect dose of luxury. The only thing that might put some visitors off staying at the Titanic is that it’s a 10-minute drive out of the centre of town in an area that’s currently being redeveloped, so there’s not much around it. But for us, the quality of the hotel made up for that and we highly recommend you try it.

Pullman Liverpool

The Pullman is a little too ‘business’ for our usual taste, but its location on the water tilted the balance and gave it a space on this list. It’s the most standard hotel out of the four, but distinguishes itself from other mainstream hotels with a modern, minimalist style, including touches that nod towards its maritime location. But the best thing about the hotel is the view. We had a corner room on the 7th floor, meaning we could look one way and be staring out over the water to Wales, and then turn the other way for a view of Liverpool’s skyline. It was especially breathtaking at sunset. The hotel is right next to the exhibition centre, hence the business-feel, but that also makes it just a 5-minute walk from Albert Dock, so the location is ideal. If you’re looking for a boutique hotel, or quirky and original rooms, then the Pullman isn’t for you, but if your style is more minimalist and you’re more keen on location and an incredible view, than book a corner room here.
